The Importance of Hearing Protection

Workers in many different environments are exposed to high noise levels and so it is little surprise that damage to the ears and hearing is such a common occupational hazard. Employers have a duty to make sure that workers are protected from exposure to loud sounds and this includes providing them with the best hearing protection devices.

The severity of hearing damage sustained at work can vary widely. Many employees report experiencing tinnitus, which manifests as a ringing, buzzing or roaring sound in the ears. Other cases can be more serious, with a number of employees sadly losing their hearing altogether. In such cases, the affected employee is also at an elevated risk of anxiety and depression. 

Protecting the hearing of workers is crucial and employers should carry out full risk assessments in this regard, ensuring that areas of particular risk are fully identified. There should also be attempts at reducing sound levels wherever possible through the use of effective sound barriers, for example. Where noise levels cannot practically be reduced any further but are still elevated enough to potentially cause damage, appropriate hearing protection devices should be provided and the wearing of them should be enforced.
